7 Effective Study Habits
Time Management
Time management lies at the heart of inculcating great study habits. Students need to become aware that planning ahead of time can get higher grades with the same time and effort that goes into last-minute cramming. Studying and revising well ahead of time results in better grades and reduced last-minute stress. Effective study habits will reduce procrastination, increase concentration, and improve grades. Scheduling realistically and sticking to a study plan will greatly assist in time management.
Organization
Paying attention in class and keeping track of required documents and upcoming deadlines is essential for good study habits. Students can only be aware of the schedule and timeline in each class through effective organization. Awareness and vigilance eliminate extra work at the last moment and keep students prepared for upcoming tasks. Organization at the right time reduces confusion and chaos before projects, tests, and exams.
Study Space
Students spend a considerable amount of time studying. Taking a little time to tidy up the study space, ensure good lighting, and a comfortable temperature, and reducing distractions can go a long way. It is helpful if the student associates study with a pleasant and organized environment. Studying in a cluttered and chaotic environment takes a toll on the student over time.
Study Techniques
Have you heard of the Pomodoro Technique? This method involves working in focused intervals (typically 25 minutes) followed by a short break. It builds concentration and prevents burnout by encouraging full attention during study periods and allowing time to recharge. By adopting this technique, your teen may find they’re more productive and retain information better.
Focus
It is common for students to procrastinate and have several things on their minds when they are trying to study. A technique such as the Pomodoro Technique can help students to concentrate fully on the task at hand. This technique times 25 minutes of work without any distraction and allows for a 5-10-minute break before returning to the next 25 minutes of work with undivided attention. Inculcating the habit of working with undivided attention on tasks reduces the time spent on homework and assignments.
Request Help
Many times, students feel stuck at a certain point in their homework, assignments, or projects. Students may be hesitant or reluctant to ask a teacher or peer for help. Students need to be in the habit of discussing and clarifying issues and questions with teachers and their peers to succeed. Encourage them to get over their fear or hesitation and gain confidence by habitually and politely clarifying their doubts.
Study Breaks
Taking a study break gives the mind some time to recharge and return to the task at hand with renewed energy and ideas. Properly timed breaks can make the student more productive and promote concentration and focus. Organization, time management, and breaks are all tools to boost your performance.
Review
It is crucial to review your schedule and your work. Reviewing reinforces key concepts and deadlines for every class. The mind remains sharp, alert and inculcates keen attention to detail with repetition and overview.
