These Books Will Change Your Life (No, Really – We Picked Them Just for You!)

Hey everyone!

For my fellow bookworms (and soon-to-be bookworms), we’ve picked out some amazing reads for you.

Let’s dive in:

Grade 7 Highlights

Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie
What if stories weren’t just made-up tales, but something real and powerful? When Haroun’s father—famous for his incredible storytelling—suddenly loses his gift, Haroun sets off on a daring adventure to help him get it back. This book is a must-read for anyone who likes Alice in Wonderland or The Phantom Tollbooth.

The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm
Imagine waking up one day to find your grandfather is now… a teenager?? This quirky, heartwarming story is packed with humour, family chaos, and some seriously cool science. It’ll make you laugh, think, and maybe even wonder—what if?

Grade 8 Picks

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Don’t let anyone make you believe this is just another “required reading” you need to check off the list. This is a story that explores justice and compassion Through Scout’s eyes, you’ll discover the complexity of human nature and the importance of standing up for what’s right.

The Diary of Young Girl Anne Frank
This one is especially relevant today. Anne’s diary isn’t just a history lesson—it’s a window into the thoughts of someone just like us, facing unimaginable circumstances with incredible courage and hope. Fair warning: you might need tissues for this one.

Grade 9 Recs

Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Yes, there’s a movie (and it’s gorgeous), but trust us – the book is a whole different journey. While the movie shows you Pi’s incredible 227-day survival story with a Bengal tiger on the Pacific Ocean, the book lets you dive deep into Pi’s mind, exploring questions about faith, truth, and what we choose to believe.

Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett
Eskarina Smith was never meant to be a wizard—but that won’t stop her. In a world where only men wield magic, she’s ready to prove everyone wrong. With Terry Pratchett’s signature humour, this witty and thought-provoking tale is perfect for anyone who’s ever been told, “You can’t do that.”

Grade 10 Must-Reads

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
This one’s hard to describe without spoiling the magic. It starts off like a regular story about friendship at an unusual boarding school, but then it becomes something else entirely. Ishiguro has this way of slowly pulling back the curtain until you realize you’re reading something that’ll stick with you forever. Just be ready…this book will make you feel things.

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
This one is written like a collection of snapshots from life. Through Esperanza’s eyes, we see how she grew up, her dreams, and her struggles. If you’ve ever felt caught between who you are and who you want to be, this book will feel like it’s speaking directly to you.

Remember, great books not only entertain us—they help us understand ourselves and others better.
