In our ongoing series of interviews with leading college admissions counselors, we sit down with Maddie, whose recent successes include placements at NYU and Boston University. She shares her insights on what really works in today’s competitive admissions landscape.
Recent Success Stories
When asked about her most rewarding experience this year, Maddie lights up discussing multiple students achieving their dreams. “We had a fantastic acceptance to Columbia University, followed by another student getting into NYU,” she shares. Her recent wins include Noah from the Aster Pharmacy family securing admission to NYU, and Shreya receiving an early decision acceptance to Boston University.
Breaking Down Admissions Misconceptions
Common misconceptions plague the admissions process, particularly regarding acceptance rates. “All the acceptance percentages are for US-based students, and for international students they’re competing in a way more competitive pool,” Maddie explains. She emphasizes the critical importance of timing: “As early as I start, each year I want to start earlier. Just finishing all the applications, essays, getting the Letters of Recommendation—all of those have to get done before the summer.”
The Evolving Admissions Landscape
Maddie advocates for creative approaches to reaching dream schools. “Even though you may be interested in Business, Stern NYU is the most competitive. So maybe choose something like global studies that’s more interdisciplinary, then maybe transferring to NYU Stern once your GPA is up.”
Standing Out Through Unique Initiatives
Her students’ success stories showcase the power of distinctive projects:
“It’s not just about ticking off boxes,” she notes. “It’s about showing genuine passion and the ability to make a meaningful impact in your community and beyond.”
The Foundation of Success
“The best grades get the best acceptances,” Maddie emphasizes. For students with academic challenges, she advises maintaining at least a B average and explaining any grade dips in their Common App essays. “Everything else has to shine to combat that grade if that’s on your profile,” she notes.
