In the current College Admissions, straight-A grades and high test scores are no longer the full story.
Nelson Urena, a former admissions officer at Cornell, says that during his time in the admissions office, many students came through who “were academically stellar and had adequate standardized test scores, but their applications lacked tangible indicators of their passions such as a project, experiment, portfolio, or an endeavor on which they spent substantial time learning, tinkering, or creating.” As a result, they were not offered admission.
He further mentions that, on the other hand, an applicant who had written an essay about the weather station they built at home was ultimately offered admission, for he “demonstrated intellectual interest” that clearly proved the student’s fit and match for the program.
This highlights that research is becoming a key differentiator that colleges are looking for. Now the question arises, what makes a research topic outstanding?
A strong research topic should balance originality and scholarly significance while also fitting in with the interests of the individual. It should push limits, arouse real curiosity, and enable you to investigate issues that keep you up at night.
Deeper learning and a more significant influence can be ensured by choosing research topics that set up studies to test a design or solution, offer fresh ideas or viewpoints, or assess preexisting assertions. Essential steps for success include selecting and sharpening a research topic and examining potential ideas using a straightforward but controlled process.
Over the years, guiding hundreds of students through our flagship research mentorship program, AddedNova, we have witnessed that most of the students get stuck at the very initial step of a research funnel, which is selecting a research topic .
Keeping this common conundrum in mind, we outlined 15 research topics that can help students begin their research journey in 2025, with each offering an opportunity to learn deeply and showcase their intellectual creativity.

Taking the Next Step
Research in high school can feel daunting if you’re trying to figure it all out alone from choosing a topic, to designing a project, and then wondering where and how to publish. Our research mentorship program AddedNova guides students through every stage of the process.
Our scholars have been published in respected journals like IIJHSR, JSR, and CREST making it to the top 7% globally who get into Ivy league schools.
With AddedNova, we don’t stop at ideas, we walk students through the actual submission process to journals and competitions, so their work finds a real audience.
Special Opportunity
We’re offering students the chance to win a free research consultation with our mentors. To apply, submit a 300-word essay on one of the following topics:
